Former President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel passes away
The Consulate of the Czech Republic together with the Czech Community in Malta mourns the passing away of former President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel who passed away on Sunday 18th December at the age of 76.
Havel was a distinguished playwright and above all a fighter for human rights and democracy. He was a great statesman and in the eyes of the whole world his name was synonymous with that of the Czech Republic.
President Havel was a great Czech National who stood up against the Communist regime and for such he suffered ill health due to the many years he spent in prison. His reward was his country's freedom from Communist
oppression and his appointment as the first President of the Czech Republic.
This Consulate recalls President Havel's State Visit to Malta and his long standing friendship with our late President Prof. Guido de Marco. Following the official visit in 2002 President Havel had spent some days of rest as
guest of President and Mrs de Marco at San Anton Palace.
Consul General Tonio Casapinta recollects his visit to Prague Castle and his private meeting with President Havel and his consort Mrs Dragmar Havelova. They both thanked him personally for the generous donation made by the Maltese following a concert held in aid of the restoration of the archives at the Prague National Theatre, damaged by floods which had then hit the Czech Republic.
Many in Malta have fond memories of this visit.
A book of condolences will be opened at the Consulate of the Czech Republic on Wednesday 21st December between 09.00 and 16.00 hours.
